In my last post I referred to a problem I had when looking for another hosting company. Like many people I look for the best value for money and because I currently have many sites hosted on my HostGator account I was looking for a second host so I could let my son loose on that one so he didn’t eat my bandwidth and web space.

So I found this other host with an incredible offering which was recommended by a review site. Unfortunately, it was another case of what seems too good to be true usually is.

As soon as I ordered the hosting things started to go wrong like there was no order number or payment processor in the loop. It looked like I had just sent my credit card details to some email inbox in cyber space.

Later, I searched on the web and found nothing but horror stories about this company. I decided not to chase them up about where was my hosting details email. Instead I decided to keep silent and just sent a cancellation request to their billing department.

I have heard nothing from them and I don’t seem to have been billed after a week so I may be in the clear. Interestingly I noticed that the domain name I requested was registered and is now hosted in Saudi Arabia with one of those spammy domain squatting pages stuffed with links to products.

Domain registrars can cancel domains and get a refund within 5 days and repeat this process to make money (a few cents) off millions of domains that they never pay for. Maybe this is what will happen with the domain name I entered since it now has a perceived value?

I won’t say what the domain name is so I don’t give it any credit. As it happens, the domain name was only to be used as a place-holder name for links to large files such as downloads and video so the name was kind of stupid. It’s no loss really.

This fraud has been outed and coined domain kiting by Bob Parsons of GoDaddy.com

In my sidebar you can see a banner link to my main web host which I am very happy with. They have a great balance of price and value. If you are considering web hosting then go with them, you will be pleased you did.
